An industry-oriented MS program in Biomedical Engineering specialized in Medical Device Design

A customer-focused product development curriculum

Each summer, the Center for Medical Technology and Innovation welcomes a new cohort of Master’s students into our program. Our program is crafted to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for transition into the biomedical industry workforce. At the heart of our mission is a commitment to direct engagement with the customer, most often the surgeon, throughout the entirety of the product development journey. Mastering the art of collaboration with surgeons is a coveted skill sought after by companies, that is typically limited to senior engineers with years of experience.

Here’s how we ensure our students are fully prepared:

  1. Surgical Immersion: Students are immersed in the surgical environment, gaining invaluable firsthand insight into the challenges and nuances that arise during procedures.
  2. Problem-Centric Approach: By directly observing these challenges, students are empowered to innovate, and craft tailored solutions to meet real-world demands effectively.
  3. Close Collaboration with Surgeons: Through collaboration, students deeply understand identified problems, fostering a comprehensive grasp necessary for impactful product development.
  4. Usability and Human Factors: Through collaborative efforts, students glean insights into crucial aspects of usability and human factors, indispensable for creating resilient and user-friendly products.
  5. Patient Journey Engagement: Actively observing the patient journey, students obtain a better understanding of disease states and patient needs, enriching their product development approach.
  6. Specialized Curriculum: Our program offers a unique array of individual courses covering product development, FDA regulatory processes, intellectual property, quality and robust systems, and applied anatomy. Taught by industry-leading experts, these courses are exclusive to our program, setting us apart from institutions that merely assign students projects.

Our approach equips students for every stage of product development, emphasizing the identification and resolution of challenges encountered in the operating room. Following the immersive summer experience, students continue their journey through collaborative efforts during the fall and spring semesters to conceptualize, design, and prototype innovative medical devices. Combined with rigorous coursework, our program ensures that students emerge as proficient professionals poised to make significant contributions to the ever-evolving biomedical landscape.
