The David H. Smith Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology (CBVI) was formed in 1998 as part of the Aab Institute of Biomedical Sciences. Research in the Center is focused on basic research into immunological mechanisms with a long time goal of helping to design the next generation of vaccines. Investigators in the Center have research areas that focus on many areas of immunology, including T cell activation and differentiation, T cell memory and homing, MHC class II -restricted antigen presentation, T cell responses to pathogenic organisms and T cell-mediated autoimmunity. These varied research programs seek to dissect key regulatory events that control protective and pathogenic immune responses. The research programs in the Center is highly synergistic among the faculty within the Center and with investigators in other Centers and departments. Research and education in the Center build on strong faculty and graduate programs in Immunology, Microbiology and Virology, and Infectious Diseases at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

The Center occupies 31,500 square feet of exceptional research space on the top floor of the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In addition, faculty throughout the Medical Center, including those in the new research building, share state-of-the-art core facilities, which are housed in the new research building and elsewhere.

Current faculty in the Center are appointed to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Division of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Medicine. In addition, many faculty actively collaborate, share appointments, and teach in several other departments including Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Medicine, Pathology, and others. These relationships underscore the highly interactive nature of the local research environment.

Graduate Education

The University of Rochester Medical Center offers diverse opportunities in graduate and post-doctoral education. The CVBI hosts graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and MD/PhD fellows from multiple graduate and medical educations program. This interdisciplinary approach provides ample training opportunities leading to successful career development in biomedical research.
