Background of Dataset
Purpose of the Data Set Part of a series of surveys that were conducted to describe accessibility, cost and quality of health care. Allows researchers to glean information about local markets and the nation as a whole. Also, provides sound empirical information that will inform the debate about health system change.
Criteria(s) for Inclusion/Exclusion Exclusions: for household survey unmarried college students (age 18-22), unmarried children under age 18 with no parent or guardian in the household, adults on active military duty and non-responding families.
Age Range Included 0-91.
Method(s) of Data Gathering Sampled households and firms from 60 communities scattered around the U.S.
Sampling Frame/Design Three Tier design: First Tier is a sample of 12 communities from which a large number of households in each community were surveyed.
Second Tier is a sample of 48 communities from which a smaller sample of households in each community was surveyed. Together first and second tiers are known as the site sample.
The Third Tier is a smaller, independent sample known as the supplemental sample.
