Look What You’ve Been Doing!

At the suggestion of Dr. Stephanos Kyrkanides, the library will be using its bulletin board to showcase Dentistry’s research publications. Please contact us if you have a recent paper that you would like posted or if you would like a copy of any of the papers. In addition, we will also post a bibliography of articles and books published within the last year. Stop up and take a look at what you and your colleagues have been doing! The bulletin board is located just outside the entrance to the library.

Online Insights into Early Dentistry

The Miner Digital Library is typically seen as an essential resource for accessing recent publications, but the Digital Library now also links to a piece of dental history: the journal Dental Cosmos. The following was reprinted with permission from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, which developed the project to bring the journal online.

Ann Arbor, MI -- October 15, 2003 -- A wealth of information that showcases the birth and evolution of the dental profession in the U.S. from just prior to the beginning of the Civil War to the years leading up to the start of the 20th Century is now available online.

The first 33 volumes of Dental Cosmos, from the premier issue of August 1859 through December 1891, have been transferred from a print publication that, in recent years, was seen and read by only a few, to an electronic publication that is now accessible to anyone with a computer and a connection to the Internet.

Dental Cosmos was considered the source of information for practitioners for more than 70 years. In 1936, the publication merged with the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA).

The online issues contain articles about the origins of some of the clinical techniques that are still used today, what kinds of interventions were used at the time to treat various conditions, discussions about herbal remedies that did and did not work, the importance of the fluoridation of water, and other interesting and fun things about the profession.

More New Journals and New Formats

Over the past year, there have been a few changes to Bibby’s journal collection.

  • At the request of some of the dental residents, Bibby began subscribing to The Journal of Adhesive Dentistry in 2003. This quarterly journal includes clinical articles, original research, and review articles on topics related to adhesive dentistry.
  • Beginning in 2004, new issues of the Journal of Dental Research will only be available online. Cost increases prohibit maintaining both print and online subscriptions. A survey of the dental faculty indicated that keeping the online subscription would be more useful, so Bibby Library will drop the print subscription after December. Back issues will still be available in the bound journals.

Current Awareness Service

Would you like to receive the table of contents for current issues of your favorite dentistry publications? The library can send you a copy from any of our subscribed journals. For those who prefer to “go digital,” many publishers offer a Table of Contents service via email. Please contact Pam or Beth if you are interested and would like more information. There is no fee for this service and the registration process is straightforward.

Student Assistants

This fall we have six students working at Bibby to keep the library open on evenings and weekends. Our returning students are Alexis, Brad, Elizabeth, Katrina, and Rachel. We also hired new student, Kenan Warner. Kenan is a senior majoring in Chemical Engineering. Please stop up and say hello to Kenan and all of our students and feel free to ask any of our staff for help.

Statistical Software Available at Bibby

Small Stata is a software program used for manipulating and analyzing data using statistical and graphical methods. This application is available on all four of the public computers in the library. The Users' Manual is available at the Learning Center in Miner Library. Online support is available at http://www.stata.com/support/.
