JOURNAL CHANGES

Since Bibby Library became a branch of Miner Library in 1999, we have benefitted from increased access to online resources such as bibliographic databases and online journals. We have been making Bibby Library's policies and procedures similar to Miner Library's, so that library users who know how to use one library can easily use the other. We're improving access to journals by providing some titles online as well as in print, by posting a current journals list on the Web, and by rearranging the journals to match Miner Library's shelf order.

Online Journals

These journals are currently available online online for URMC faculty, staff, and residents, and are listed on Miner Digital Library (http://eg.miner.rochester.edu/ip/ip.cgi):
Acta Odontologica Scandinavica
Angle Orthodontist 2000- online free indefinitely
Archives of Oral Biology current year through Science Direct
Australian Dental Journal 1996- online free
European Journal of Orthodontics
Journal of Dentistry current year through Science Direct
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery online free trial
Journal of Orthodontics
Journal of the Canadian Dental Association July/Aug 1998-
Oral Oncology current year through Science Direct

These three titles are available online only at Bibby Library for two concurrent users. To use these journals online, ask at the Bibby desk.
American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry
Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology and Endodontics

Current Journals List

Bibby Library's current journals list is now posted on the Bibby Library Web site http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/Dentistry/Bibby/journals.html. The list is also available as a handout in Bibby Library. The entry for each title tells where current issues are kept, and what years and volumes are in Bibby Library and Miner Library. If the journal is available online, the Web address for the journal is listed with a link to the online journal. The last line of the entry tells which databases index the journal.

Sample entry:

Of course, the Voyager catalog lists complete journal holdings for Bibby Library.

Journal Shelves Rearranged

Ruth DuMont and the library's student assistants recently rearranged the journals so they are now shelved in the same order as in Miner Library. Library users need know only one shelving system to find journals in both libraries. Journals are shelved alphabetically by title. Articles in the title (a, an, the) are ignored, as are prepositions (of, for, in, etc.). Acronyms, such as ASDC or SADJ, are shelved at the beginning of the journal titles that start with the first letter.

CLINICAL LIBRARIAN PILOT PROJECT

During the first half of 2001, we are testing the idea of bringing "clinical librarian" service to Dentistry faculty and residents through the Clinical Librarian Pilot Project. As part of this project, Christine DeGolyer attends Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery rounds to provide literature searches and other information to answer questions that arise during discussions. She also provides information for residents preparing presentations for rounds and for EDD faculty meetings. If the project is successful, we plan to expand the service to more departments.

BIBBY LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Bibby Library Advisory Committee had its first meeting on October 5th. We thank these people for serving on this committee: Dr. Robert Berkowitz (chair), Dr. William Bowen, Dr. Stephanos Kyrkanides, Dr. Wilfred Springer, Dr. Todd Thierer, and Dr. Paul Zottola. Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz and Julie Sollenberger, Miner Library director, also attended the first meeting. We discussed changes resulting from Bibby Library becoming a branch of Miner Library, journal subscriptions, and priorities for library services, including the clinical librarian pilot project. At our next meeting on March 16th, we will discuss online journals and providing a dentistry subset of the Miner Digital Library.

STUDENT ASSISTANTS

Five student assistants keep Bibby Library open evenings and weekends. Ronald Alonzo, Irina Ponomarenko, and Michael Sung are undergraduates who have been with us for several semesters. Jason Sundram is new this semester, and works mornings. We are also lucky to have Sandris Bajars, an EDC resident, working evening hours.

WEB OVID

Miner and Bibby Libraries are transitioning from the Windows version of Ovid to the Web version by March 31st . Web Ovid has extra features not available on the Windows version, such as checking Medline citations in the Voyager Library Catalog and placing Interlibrary Loan requests online. Web Ovid also offers PreMedline, a database of the most recent articles that have not yet been added to Medline. URMC faculty, staff, and residents can access Web Ovid on the Web through the Miner Digital Library (http://eg.miner.rochester.edu/ip/ip.cgi). To apply for a Miner Digital Library password, go to http://eg.miner.rochester.edu/apply.

Miner Library is offering half-hour classes about the Ovid Web version of Medline. To register for a class, call Miner Library Reference Desk at 5-2487. All classes are in Miner Library's Classroom I.

Class Dates & Times:

Friday, Feb.23 12:30-1PM
Friday, Mar.2, 10:30-11AM
Friday, Apr.27, 11-11:30 AM
