Changes in the Library

Over the past three months, there have been many changes in the Library. Our goal is to continually work to make the Library and its collection more functional and accessible for all patrons. We hope you'll stop by soon to see what's new!

Reorganization of Books and Journals

Have you ever come to the Library and found that all the books on TMJ were checked out? Or maybe you're looking for the latest issue of General Dentistry – and it is missing. In order to decrease loss while maintaining access, we have begun to reorganize the collection. The new book and journal sections are described below.

  • All current, unbound issues of journals have been moved to the center aisle. Previously, there were two separate sections of unbound journals. All unbound issues are now shelved together and the shelves can be locked when the Library is not staffed.
  • There is a new set of shelves for books on Closed Reserve. To assure that books in each specialty area are always available, these books are set aside for use in the Library or for limited circulation. Located in the last aisle, the shelves have locking wire mesh doors, which secure the books but also allow patrons to view the collection. Books on Closed Reserve can be accessed whenever the Library is staffed.
  • Newly purchased books are now initially shelved next to the Closed Reserve section. Like the books on reserve, the new books are locked, but easily visible. New books circulate for two weeks. After six months, these books are relocated to the circulating collection.

Finally - A New Copier!

In February, the Library obtained a new copier. The Xerox "Bookmark" is designed with Libraries in mind, with a special platform to support books and bound journals as well as other features to make copying easier. Best of all, the copier provides high quality copies without paper jams or other interruptions. Copies are still $.05 per page and copy cards are available at the circulation desk.

New Phone Installation

The Library has added a new phone line for patron use. This extension can be used for brief local and on-campus calls and for receiving and returning pages. The phone is in the back of the Library, adjacent to the thesis collection. This location has the advantage of being both quiet and private – especially important for patient related conversations.

Student Assistants

In December, Mehul Patel joined the staff of Bibby Library. Mehul is a senior at the University, majoring in Economics. This semester he is working Thursday evenings and Saturdays.

ILLiad Coming Soon

Have you ever needed a book or journal article that the library does not own? Soon the library will be using an online ordering system called ILLiad. ILLiad will enable users to place and track their own orders right from the Internet. Check out the benefits of ILLiad at http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/Miner/illiad.html.

New Acquisitions

The following are shelved in our New Books/Closed Reserve area. New books circulate for two weeks and reserve books can go out for two hours or overnight. Unfortunately, several books disappeared before we set up the new shelves. We would appreciate the return of any lost books and journals.
