- Admission Requirements: Applicants from countries other than the United States and Canada will be considered for admission to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program if they have completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry or General Practice Residency program and are eligible for licensure in New York State.
Program Director
Lee D. Pollan, D.M.D, M.S. is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Georgetown University.
Pollan serves as Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is Director of our residency program.
Dr. Pollan has received numerous awards and served in many elected offices. He was the recipient of Eastman Dental's part-time faculty award in 1999, and received the Award of Merit from the 7th District Dental Society in 2007.
He has served as the Regent for Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity and Secretary of the Alpha Omega Foundation. Dr. Pollan was elected President of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in1996 and, in 2007 served as President of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation.
Clinical Activities
Clinical experience includes dental implants, full-mouth reconstruction, dento-alveolar surgery, autogenous bone graft, sinus grafting, treatment of orofacial pathology, dentofacial deformities, conscious and deep sedation for surgical procedures, soft tissue, pre-prosthodontic surgery and apicoectomy procedures.
Operating Room Activities
Surgical procedures include orthognathic surgery, treatment and management of facial trauma and reconstructive surgery, including bone harvesting, bone grafting and TMJ surgery. Oral and Maxillofacial surgical services serves as a resource for other surgical disciplines in the treatment of patients with orofacial surgical needs.
Courses
- Formal courses in: Physical Diagnosis, Survey in Anesthesia and Pharmacology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Core, Surgical Anatomy, Head and Neck Conference, Practice Management, Selected audit of Graduate Core Program and ATLS
- Additional education in physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, blood borne pathogen and infection control, risk management, pathology, craniofacial development and trauma are provided with the seminar and conference program.
- Further didactic and clinical education is provided by attendance at regional and national meetings and periodic non-institutional educational conferences.
Required Rotations
Anesthesia, Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Pathology Service.
Elective Rotations
Clinical Laboratory Service, radiology, or other electives as per resident requests.
The OMFS resident, when assigned to another service, participates in all aspects of that service including on-call responsibilities, conference attendance, participation in teaching rounds, and any other activity required of the residents of each service.
Tuition/Stipend
All first year oral and maxillofacial surgery residents receive a stipend of $45,874.
