Hemoglobinopathy Screening

There are many different types of hemoglobin.

What is Hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is the substance that carries oxygen in the blood and gives blood its red color. Hemoglobin type is not the same thing as blood type. The type of hemoglobin we have is determined by inheritance. The majority of individuals in the world have only the normal type of hemoglobin. However, there are a variety of other hemoglobin types.

Why is it Important
to Determine My
Hemoglobin Type?

The test result can help assure that your children are not at risk for a serious inherited disease of the blood. This simple blood test can provide you with information regarding the health of your future children.

Who is Most Likely
to Have an Abnormal
Type of Hemoglobin?

Persons of Asian, African or Mediterranean origin are at highest risk, but anyone can be affected.

We Have Never Had
this Problem in Our Family

Most children born with this type of disorder are born to parents who do not know their children are at risk. Even if you have several children who do not have this problem, the only way to know if your future children are at risk is to be tested. Inherited diseases of the blood can be serious and may even be life threatening. People with these diseases usually require special medical care.
