How to prevent a fall: Make sure your feet are healthy.

As you age, you may start to lose some of the sensation in your feet. When your feet can’t feel the floor as well, you are more likely to fall.

Here are some guidelines for keeping your feet healthy and preventing a fall:

  • Have your doctor check you for diabetic neuropathy, which can lead to loss of sensation in your feet.

  • Have a geriatrician (a doctor who specializes in older adults) check your gait to see if you are at risk for a fall.

  • Wear shoes that are comfortable and supportive, and which have a non-slip tread.
