“Three Years of the Theatre, A Comic Tragedy in 23 Tableaux" by Paul Miller, University of Rochester International Theatre Program photographer, is on display from September 1 through November 30 in Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester Medical Center.
The exhibit consists of 23 photographs selected from over 12,000 taken at Theatre productions from 2003 until 2006, during Paul’s tenure as the International Theatre Program’s official photographer. The provocative images represent the depth and breadth of the Theatre’s productions: from dark and melancholy to ebullient and romantic; from familiar and time-honored to disturbing and avant-garde.
A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Paul describes himself as a music theorist, violinist, and violist who also does “a lot of other things.” After moving to “one of the major hubs of the photographic Universe” in 1998, Paul started wondering about new directions for his photography. So, why live theater? “I think that we need the community of the theatre now more than ever,” says Paul. “In an age where many of us experience life more and more through tiny white earbuds, video game consoles, and downloadable movies, live actors satisfy our need for a direct, personal connection...in the theatre, we can still learn ways to gain a more nuanced and profound understanding of who we are.”
