Robert J. Joynt, M.D., Ph.D.

Introduction

Robert J. Joynt, M.D. was a distinguished neurologist, medical educator, author, editor, and successively  department chair, medical school dean, and CEO at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The Papers of Robert J. Joynt, M.D. reflect all these activities – although some earlier aspects of his career are under-represented (e.g., there is very little in the collection from his years at the University of Iowa College of Medicine). The Papers of Robert J. Joynt, M.D. are contained in eighty-five boxes occupying forty-two linear feet.

Biography

Robert J. Joynt, M.D.The son of a dentist, Robert J. Joynt was born in Lemars, Iowa on 22 December 1925, the youngest of four children. After completing high school in 1944, Joynt enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in India as a sergeant in the Signal Corps. When he was discharged in 1946, Joynt returned to Lamars and entered Westmar College, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1949. He then entered the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, from which he received a medical degree in 1952. Joynt interned at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal (1952-53), spent the following year at Cambridge University on a Fulbright scholarship, and then returned to Iowa City to complete a neurology residency at the University Hospital (1954-57). From 1957 to 1966, Joynt was associate and then assistant professor in the Dept. of Neurology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. In 1963 he was a USPHS fellow in the Dept. of Anatomy at Iowa, earning that year both his masters and doctoral degrees in anatomy.

For forty years, the neurology service at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry had been a unit within the Dept. of Medicine. In the mid-1960s, the decision was made to make neurology a separate department, and in 1966 Joynt was appointed the first chairman of the Dept. of Neurology, and neurologist-in-chief at Strong Memorial Hospital. The department flourished during Joynt’s tenure as chair, and in 1985 he was appointed Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Provost for Health Affairs.

As the administration of the Medical Center became increasingly complex during the 1980s, University leadership made the decision to create the position of Vice President for Health Affairs. In 1990, Joynt was promoted to this newly created position, which he held until 1994 when he returned to the Dept. of Neurology. Three years later, to honor his many contributions to the Medical Center and to the field of neurology, Joynt was made Distinguished University Professor.

Dr. Joynt was the author of more than two hundred journal articles, book chapters, books reviews and editorials. His contribution to medical journalism extended beyond being an author, however. Joynt served on the editorial board of numerous medical and neuroscience journals, served as the associate editor and then editor of the Archives of neurology (1980-97), and was founding editor of Seminars of neurology (1980-91).

Joynt was a member of numerous professional societies, including the Royal Society of Medicine, the Central Society of Neurological Research (president, 1965-66), the American Medical Association (neurology section chair, 1971-75), the American Academy of Neurology (president, 1977-79; Netter Award, 1988), the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (president, 1979); and the American Neurological Association (president, 1987-88; Jacoby Award, 1992). He was a member of and/or consultant to the American Federation for Aging Research, the Association of Academic Health Centers, the International Commission for the Standardization of Aphasia Testing, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Neurological & Communication Disorders $ Stroke, the National Library of Medicine, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences, the U.S. Air Force, and the World Federation of Neurology

In 1953 Joynt married Margaret McGivern, an Iowa law graduate who became an attorney in New York after moving to Rochester in 1966. The Joynts raised six children. Robert J. Joynt died at Strong Memorial Hospital on 13 April 2012 on the way from his office to neurology grand rounds.

Organization of the Joynt Papers

Organizations (Boxes 1-44)

This series is comprised of material relating to Joynt’s involvement in scholarly societies, universities (including his files on the University of Rochester), government agencies, foundations, social groups (e.g., the Cosmos Club, the Pundit Club), etc. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by organization name.

Of particular interest are the files pertaining to the American Academy of Neurology (Boxes 2-7), the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (Boxes 7-8), the American Neurological Association (Boxes 9-13), the Institute of Medicine (Boxes 23-26), the National Library of Medicine (Boxes 30-32), and the Working Group on Presidential Disability (Boxes 43-44).

Correspondence (Boxes 45-59)

There are two subseries within the Joynt correspondence. Correspondence that was arranged chronologically in his office files is thus arranged in Boxes 45-51. These files cover a wide variety of topics and correspondents, and span the years 1966-2012. The bulk of this correspondence, however, was generated between 1980 and 1995.

Joynt’s office also maintained an alphabetical correspondence file (Boxes 52-58) that was limited to correspondents within the University of Rochester, e.g., University president Dennis O’Brien, provost Brian Thompson, former School of Medicine dean Frank E. Young, etc. The bulk of this internal correspondence spans the years 1980-89.

There is also correspondence and other material generated during Dr. Joynt's tenure as the URMC's chief executive officer in the Files of the Office of the Vice President for Health Affairs. This material spans the years 1990-1995 and was transferred to the Miner Library from the office of Medical Center CEO Bradford Berk, M.D. in the spring of 2013.

Publications (Boxes 59-73)

The publications series is divided into three subseries. The first subseries (Boxes 59-64) contains journal articles, book chapters, book reviews and editorials of which Joynt was author or co-author. The publications in these six boxes are arranged chronologically by date of publication.

The second publications subseries (Boxes 65-68) contains files on books edited by Joynt, including Baker & Joynt’s clinical neurology. The third publications subseries (Boxes 69-73) pertains to Joynt’s activities as a journal editor. These files include material on his years as editor of the Archives of neurology and the Seminars in neurology, as well as his membership on the JAMA editorial board and the AMA’s board of specialty journal editors.

Research (Boxes 74-76)

This series contains the grant applications for research on Alzheimer’s disease of which Joynt was principal investigator. This material is arranged chronologically by date of successive grant applications (1981-89).

Teaching (Boxes 77-80)

This brief series contains two very interesting sets of lectures. The first and earlier set is an extensive series of hand-written lecture notes for “Junior lectures” on neurology delivered at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in the early 1960s. These thirty-four lectures are arranged alphabetically by the topic of each lecture. A second set of course material pertains to the Neural Science Course that Joynt directed at the University of Rochester School of Medicine from 1981 to 1984. Toward the end of his career, Joynt also participated in teaching the Human Structure & Function course for first year medical students. There is no material in this series on the Neurobiology of Neurologic Disease course that Joynt co-directed between 1998 and 2005.

Lectures (Boxes 81-82)

Closely related to Joynt’s teaching files (Boxes 77-80) is this series of lectures on neurological topics delivered either in a classroom setting, as special lectures, or as part of rounds. Although few of these lectures have a date or location, most seem to have been written and delivered during the 1960s and 70s. They are arranged alphabetically by topic heading.

Talks (Boxes 83-85)

Most of the talks in this series were delivered outside the University of Rochester and outside the classroom. Joynt was widely sought as a speaker. This series includes talks delivered at conferences, to medical societies, at events honoring a colleague, guest lectures, talks to clubs, etc. These talks range in topic from neurology to medical education, medical history, presidential disability, and so on. They are arranged chronologically by date of delivery. Some talks delivered at conferences may be found (or be duplicated) in the Organizations series.
