John Bennett, M.D.
Professor of Oncology in Medicine, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology

He served as head of the morphology/cytochemistry section at the NIH Clinical Center before moving to Rochester. He is founder of the French-American-British Cooperative Leukemia Working Group and is renowned for his research into the diagnosis and treatment of hematological malignancies. An international expert in leukemia and a pioneer in myelodysplastic syndromes research, he received the 2004 Career Achievement in Clinical Hematology Award by Celgene Corporation. For 30 years, he was principal investigator for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group. He has held a number of leadership positions throughout the world, and currently serves as chair of The Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation and editor-in-chief of Leukemia Research journal. His major research interest is to integrate the new classification of MDS into the study of new agents that may hold promise for people suffering from this blood disorder, which often leads to leukemia. Dr. Bennett is the principal investigator on a training grant from the John Hartford Foundation through the American Society of Clinical Oncology to develop combined Geriatric-Oncology Fellowship Programs at ten selected academic medical centers nationally. Two graduates of the geriatrics fellowship program participated in this program at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
