Dr. Karuza received his bachelors degree from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He has also received a Specialist Certificate in Psychology of Aging from the University of Michigan/Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology. He has an appointment, since 1992, as Visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester, where he has consistently worked with the Geriatric Fellowship Program and, more recently, as the Director of Evaluation and Research at the Bureau of Health Professions funded Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center. In addition to his duties in the Division of Geriatrics, he also holds an appointment as Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the State University College at Buffalo. Dr. Karuza's funded and published research interests focus on changing physician practice patterns, patient empowerment, and quality of long term care. Recent highlights include his collaborative work with Dr. Paul Katz in the study of physician practice and staffing patterns in nursing homes and his involvement in the Health Care Finance Administration funded project, "Randomized Controlled Trial of Consumer Directed Care for People with Chronic Illnesses (95-C-9046712-02)", Dr. Gerald Eggert Principal Investigator. Dr. Karuza also has ongoing interest in program evaluation, especially the development and evaluation of innovative geriatric educational activities.
