Research Training Grant in Geriatrics and Gerontology - Faculty
Thomas Pearson, M.D., Ph.D, MPH (Co-PI)
Professor and Chair of Community and Preventive Medicine
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
Dr. Pearson’s research has involved basic science, clinical trials, and epidemiology, but for the purposes of this training program, he would involve fellows in the latter two areas. His areas of interest involve three major areas: etiology and pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, factors affecting lipid and lipoprotein metabolism including dietary factors and drugs, and implementation of strategies and guidelines to reduce CHD risk. Current studies relevant to this training program include a multicenter randomized trial of two levels of atorvastatin in patients with coronary artery disease, and a project to develop programs for cardiovascular disease prevention targeted at communities in Western New York. Dr. Pearson has a long track record of training successful clinical researchers at Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and the URSMD.
