Yeates Conwell, M.D.

Professor of Psychiatry
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
Co-Director of the University of Rochester Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide (CSPS)
The University of Rochester Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide (CSPS) is a multi-disciplinary group with three principle objectives: 1) to define risk and protective factors for suicidal behavior in vulnerable populations; 2) to design and test preventive interventions; and 3) to support the education of junior investigators at the pre and post-doctoral level in the rigorous conduct of suicide research. Dr. Conwell’s particular focus is on suicidal behaviors in older adults. Fellows are welcome to work with Dr. Conwell and colleagues in a variety of ongoing and planned projects. They include the analysis of data collected in recently completed NIMH-funded R01 case-control studies of attempted suicide among older adults with major affective disorders and of older adults who have completed suicide. As well, fellows may participate in the development of preventive interventions for older adults receiving social services in community settings, access enabled by Dr. Conwell’s partnership for research with the Rochester area’s largest aging services providers. Dr. Conwell has a strong track record of mentorship, and is the Program Director of a NIMH-funded postdoctoral training program for suicide prevention research (T32 MH20061). The curriculum and conferences will be available to fellows, further extending the training opportunities available to them.
