Application Process

PGY-1 Applications

  • The University of Rochester Internal Medicine Residency Program accepts PGY-1 applications only through ERAS®, the Electronic Residency Application Service administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). If you are graduating from, or have graduated from, a U.S. medical school, apply to this program by first contacting your school’s student affairs or dean’s office. Ask for information and software for ERAS 2009. Or visit the ERAS website for more information. Click here to begin registering online with ERAS.
  • If you are a Canadian medical student, please contact the Canadian Resident Matching Service, 151 Slater Street, Suite 802, Ottawa, Ontario, K1P-5H3 Canada. Or call (613) 237-0075 for ERAS processing information.
  • If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for application materials and eligibility requirements. Write to: ECFMG-ERAS Program, P.O. Box 13467, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3467, U.S.A. Or go to www.ecfmg.org. Foreign medical school graduates must be certified by ECFMG, and meet the specific criteria of the University of Rochester Medicine Residency Program, as outlined below.

Required Documents

New PGY-1 applications and supporting documents must be received at the ERAS Post Office no later than December 15, 2008. The Department of Medicine only accepts electronically submitted applications through ERAS.

The following items are required as part of your ERAS application:

  • Personal statement—This is a brief narrative statement discussing your interest in this particular internship, plans for residency training, and your career goals in medicine. Goals might include academic medicine, practice, general internal medicine, a medicine subspecialty, a specific practice location, and so on.
  • Official medical school transcript
  • Dean's letter—Ask your medical school to provide a copy of your dean's letter. We need it by November 1, 2008.
  • Letters of recommendation—In addition to an "official departmental letter," request at least two letters of recommendation from members of the internal medicine faculty at your medical school, or faculty from schools where you have taken electives. If no "official departmental letter" is available at your school, request at least three letters of recommendation.
  • USMLE transcripts
  • A recent photograph

Criteria for International Medical Graduates

In addition to the items listed above, all international medical graduates must either be permanent residents of the United States or have a J-1 visa, nor be more than 5 years postgraduate.

Interview Procedures

  • Invitations to visit our program and to have interviews with our faculty will be extended to applicants only after the selection committee has reviewed the material supporting your application. Note: A dean's letter is required to complete your application. However, we may be able to invite you for an interview before receiving it. Therefore, send other supporting materials as soon as possible.
  • After reviewing these materials, we will contact you via email, if we wish to invite you to visit our program and have an interview. We interview candidates on selected Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in November, December, and January. Interviews require a full day. Candidates selected for interviews will have an opportunity to meet with faculty and residents on interview day. View interview dates.
  • If for reasons of personal hardship you are unable to visit Rochester, special arrangements (such as a telephone interview with the program director or associate program director) may be made. Under these circumstances, be assured that this will not compromise your chances for selection.

Internship Appointments

Candidates for internship are selected through the National Residency Matching Program. Appointments begin June 26, 2009.
