Research Training Grant in Geriatrics and Gerontology - Faculty

Deepak Sahasrabudhe, M.D.

Professor of Medicine
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry

Development of frailty in the elderly is a significant problem leading to disability and decline in functional status in many prostate cancer patients who undergo androgen-ablation.  Since July 2003, Dr. Sahasrabudhe has mentored a geriatrics fellow, Naeem Tahir, MD, in studying frailty in older men with prostate cancer, using microarray analysis as well as clinical and physiologic parameters to differentiate the frailty associated with inactivity from that secondary to cancer.  They hypothesize that the variability in frailty observed in the elderly androgen-ablated prostate cancer patients may be due to varying levels of induction of inflammatory cytokines, and that the gene profiling of androgen-ablated frail subjects compared to non-frail subjects will yield information on the mechanisms of frailty and potential interventions.  Dr. Sahasrabudhe is the PI for a newly funded clinical combined Geriatrics / Oncology fellowship, and this Training Grant proposal would provide a research track for these fellows.
