Dr. Williams completed his medical degree at Harvard School of Medicine in 1950. He completed his residency in internal medicine in1954 at John Hopkins University and completed a fellowship at Boston University ,VAMC and the University of North Carolina. Dr. Williams, with background as Director of the National Institute on Aging from 1983 to 1991, is recognized as a founding father of geriatrics in the United States.

Dr. Williams is interested in encouraging and working to help develop research in multiple aspects of aging and chronic conditions. He has been directly involved in research in metabolic and dementing aspects and in the delivery of health services including comprehensive geriatric assessment, the Program for All-inclusive Care of Elderly (PACE model), and continuing care networks.
