Dr. Paul R. Katz received his BS and MD degrees from the University of Michigan and completed training in Internal Medicine at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After finishing two years in public health service working with older adults, Dr. Katz completed a fellowship in geriatrics at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1984 and went on to direct geriatric services at the Buffalo Veteran's Administration Medical Center. In 1991 Dr. Katz joined the faculty at the University of Rochester (U of R) where he is currently Professor of Medicine. He is Medical Director of Monroe Community Hospital, one of the leading teaching nursing homes in the country, and also directs a geriatric fellowship program at the U of R. Dr. Katz is also Director of the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center, sponsored by the Bureau of Health Professions.
Dr. Katz' research interests have focused on physician practice patterns in long term care and on geriatric education. He has participated in a number of NIA (Pepper Center) and Hartford Foundation sponsored programs including the Center of Excellence, Expansion of Home Care Into Academic Medicine, and the Initiative to Improve Resident Education in Geriatrics. He is on the editorial boards of Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and Journal of the American Medical Directors Association and has edited or co-edited eight textbooks including The Practice of Geriatrics, Advances in Long Term Care, and Psychiatric Care in the Nursing Home. Dr. Katz has also served on a number of AGS and AMDA committees, including a recent appointment to the AGS Board of Directors, and advisory boards in addition to both national and international consultation activities.
