Activities and Interests:  Dr. Dudek is currently engaged in full time clinical pulmonary and critical care medicine. He is most interested in maximizing the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of flexible bronchoscopy. The use of trans-bronchial needle aspiration for diagnosis and staging of mediastinal malignant disease is well established and is now being applied to non-malignant diseases such as sarcoidosis. Argon plasma coagulation and electrocautery are being developed for management of airway obstructing lesions in patients with inoperable disease. Lastly, he is investigating the applicability of intratumoral chemotherapy  for non-operative patients with extraluminal neoplasms producing airway obstruction.

Michael C. Kallay, M.D.

Activities and Interests:  Dr. Kallay is primarily based at Highland Hospital. The pulmonary unit at Highland Hospital has a cardiopulmonary exercise laboratory that is used for diagnosing dyspnea of unknown etiology. This laboratory performs approximately 60 studies per year and receives referrals from throughout western New York. Areas of special interest include obesity and mitochondrial myopathies.

Dr. Kallay maintains a strong interest in clinical trials involving patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Trials have been conducted thus far utilizing beta and gamma interferon, etanercept, and perfenidone. A wide variety of cases of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias and interstitial lung disease secondary to connective tissue disease are seen by referral for diagnosis and treatment.

Activities and Interests: Respiratory Syncytial Virus causes severe disease in infants and elderly.  Immune responses have been implicated in severe disease.  The immune mechanisms of RSV severe disease in primary infection (infants) versus secondary infection (elderly) are probably quite different.  Dr. Lee's research interests include understanding the T and B cell immunology of severe respiratory viral infections in infants and the elderly.

Activities and Interests: Dr. Modrak's primary interest is sleep medicine. The Strong Sleep Disorders Center is a 14 bed, state of the art fully accreditted facility performing over 2500 sleep studies a year.  Dr. Donald Greenblatt is the medical director, and Dr. Joe Modrak is the associate director and the director of post graduate education at the sleep center.  All fellows spend a minimum of 2 weeks (longer if desired by the fellow) rotating at the Strong Sleep Disorders Center in both their 2nd and 3rd years of the fellowship during which time they will be exposed to all facets of sleep medicine.  The Strong Sleep Disorders Center is primarily a clinical facility, but we have been involved in a number of research projects.  These research projects include a study of a new medicine for treatment of narcolepsy as well as several studies looking at pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

Activities and Interests:  Dr. White's focus is to understand the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension (PAH) and to apply the best science in the care of patients.  His lab uses a rat model of severe PAH (pneumonectomy and monocrotaline) and they measure the effects of PAH on exercise tolerance.   Dr. White is currently treating ~50 patients for PAH with 15 patients on a prostacyclin agent.
