Government Organizations | Journals | Professional Organizations Government OrganizationsThe Armed Forces Institute of Pathology offers information on AFIP consultations, courses, publications, and study sets. Many of the Departments have interesting features--for instance, the Head and Neck Division has a Case of the Month, Gynecologic and Breast Pathology has a selection of breast lesions that mimic carcinoma, and so forth. You have to dig down into the Department section to find these. There is an online Urologic Pathology Bladder Course. The National Museum of Health and Medicine is worth exploring. Test kits, instruments, and other products used in the lab are regulated by the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) or Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). Each has a searchable database of approvals and other information. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mega-site with information for the general public and for professionals. Good reference for lab safety: Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 4th edition. Full publication is available on line. The National Academies reports activities of the government advisory groups, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. The National Academy Press offers over 2,000 titles for reading online. National Institutes of Health with grants and funding opportunities. See also the National Science Foundation. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has many concerns regarding lab operations and employee safety. JournalsActa Cytologica Free Medical Journals.com attempts to list all medical journals with free full-text access (either current or 1 month - 2 years after publication). Provides links to archives of these publications. Professional OrganizationsAmerican Society for Clinical Pathology. Membership and registry information, resources for careers in medical technology, publications (for professionals and the general public), National Lab Week materials, members-only e-mail discussion groups, and a selection of online lectures available free of charge to ASCP members. American Society for Microbiology. Many areas on their site (including the job board) are available for members only, but much is also accessible. See the "Scientific Divisions" section--some divisions offer lots of information on their own web sites. Association of Pathology Chairs includes a Program Directors Section, for directors of pathology residency training programs, and a Pathology Department Administrators Section.
