On-field Blood Test Can Diagnose Sports Concussions

A brain protein, S100B, which may soon be detected by a simple finger-stick blood test, accurately distinguishes a sports-related concussion from sports exertion, according to a study of college athletes in Rochester, N.Y., and Munich, Germany, and published in PLOS ONE by Jeffrey J. Bazarian, M.D, associate professor at the University of Rochester.

Tobacco Smoke Mimics Jet Lag: Study Makes Cover of Biology Journal

A URMC study that found that tobacco smoke impairs our body clocks is featured on the cover of the January issue of The FASEB Journal. Scientists believe that the impact of environmental toxins like cigarette smoke on sleep and overall health is an important and growing area of interest.

Potential New Parkinson’s Treatment Passes Hurdle

A Phase 2 clinical trial of the nutritional supplement inosine has shown that the compound can safely and effectively raise levels of urate, a naturally occurring compound found in blood. Scientists suspect that urate may slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease.

URMC Study Chosen as One of the “Breakthroughs of the Year”

At the end of each year, the editors of Science magazine sift through the previous 12 months of research and select ten “breakthroughs” that signify seminal scientific achievements.  This year’s list includes a study by URMC neuroscientists that reveals that the brain cleans itself while we sleep.
