Transforming the Learner… at a World-Class University
Educational FacilitiesMost of the educational activities in the first two years of medical school take place in the education wing, which houses three large teaching auditoriums, numerous smaller conference rooms, the multidisciplinary laboratories, two computer learning laboratories, a student lounge, and the Offices for Medical Education. Students benefit from the excellent educational facilities afforded by the completion of the University of Rochester Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building, and a new clinical research building opened in 2002. In addition to providing state-of-the-art research laboratories, the building provides two new conference-style lecture auditoriums and 12 new problem-based learning (PBL) classrooms as well as new admissions and student services facilities within our Office of Medical Education. Each of the PBL rooms is arranged as a combination classroom and physician's office for use in small group teaching, patient exams, and faculty development exercises.Strong Memorial Hospital and Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong are the principal sites for clinical teaching. These hospitals offer facilities and services for approximately 750 inpatients. The resident and attending staff of the hospital participate actively in graduate medical education programs as well as the education of medical students. Over 50,000 patients are discharged from Strong Memorial and Highland Hospitals each year. The University of Rochester is a private, coeducational institution with about 4,400 full-time undergraduates, 2,800 full-time graduate students, and 900 part-time graduate students. The University's main campus is situated on 85 wooded acres directly across the street from the Medical Center. Rochester consistently ranks among the top 30 institutions, both public and private, in federal funding for research and development. The Carnegie Foundation lists Rochester in its highest category, "Research I," which includes 28 prestigious private universities in the United States-among them, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Penn, and Stanford. Rochester faculty and alumni include 7 Nobel Laureates and 11 Pulitzer Prize winners. |
