WelcomeTraining in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Rochester Medical Center focuses on the residents. We see each one as an individual, where his or her potential is fully developed. Anesthesiology, along with all of medicine, is changing rapidly. So, our residency program is dynamic. The learning environment is caring and stable, as well as interactive. It emphasizes didactics, individual attention, and collegiality. Key Elements of the ProgramClinical TrainingTogether, our residents administer more than 30,000 anesthetics a year, providing anesthesia for all types of surgical procedures. As training progresses, residents are assigned increasingly complicated anesthetics. This develops both confidence and competence. Faculty members were trained at many institutions, so residents are exposed to diverse anesthetic approaches and techniques. DidacticsResidents acquire a complete knowledge base of anesthesiology. For details, see our brochure. The curriculum produces results: excellent performance by our graduates on the written and oral ABA board exams, and outstanding career placement. ResearchThe department is involved in cutting-edge research in basic and clinical sciences. Work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, by industry, and by internally supported studies. Most of our faculty members are engaged in active research projects, and they encourage resident participation. Many residents present their research or case reports at the annual Midwest Anesthesia Residents' Conference. AtmosphereOur anesthesiology training program is humane, a tribute to the fact that the entire department focuses on residents. The faculty views residents as colleagues and friends. ACGME AccreditationIn May 2003 we received the full unqualified five year re-accreditation from the ACGME which was only given to the top 20-25% of anesthesiology programs.
