Strong Connections Staff
Robert Pollard, Ph.D.
is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry (Psychology) at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine. There, he heads
the Deaf Wellness Center, home of numerous initiatives pertaining
to health care, mental health services, and professional education
opportunities for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. His
"Program for Deaf Trainees" has received national
acclaim. For this and other accomplishments, the American Psychological
Association (APA) honored him with their 1994 early career award
for Distinguished Contribution to Psychology in the Public Interest.
Dr. Pollard writes and lectures widely on variety of mental
health and health care topics affecting deaf consumers and professionals.
He has been principal investigator on 22 federal, foundation,
regional, and local grants and has published over 40 articles
and book chapters. Dr. Pollards scholarship interests
include psychopathology, psychological testing, cochlear implantation,
and sign language interpreting. He is active in several national
organizations, especially the APA, where he founded and chairs
a Special Interest Section on Deafness and has served on several
disability and public interest-related boards and committees.

Kathy Miraglia, M.S., C.S.C.
oversees daily operations at Strong Connections. Ms. Miraglia
also manages the Interpreter Services Program at University
of Rochester Medical Center through the Continuity of Care and
Case Management Division. This includes ASL and foreign language
interpreter services. She is certified by the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf and provides direct interpreter services for the
University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Connections.
Ms. Miraglia has specialized in healthcare interpreting for
over twenty years. Ms. Miraglia is a respected educator and
consumer advocate in deaf healthcare topic areas. She currently
holds a Masters degree in Human Resources from the Rochester
Institute of Technology.

Steve Barnett, M.D.
oversees medical aspects of Strong Connections and our relations
with healthcare personnel and facilities. Dr. Barnett is an
Assistant Professor in the University of Rochester Department
of Family Medicine. His research, teaching and clinical interests
include healthcare across languages and cultures, healthcare
system access and people who are deaf, and physician-patient
communication. He has presented at national and international
conferences on these topics and has a number of publications
related to healthcare and people who are deaf. His clinical
experience includes rural emergency medicine and family medicine
in rural, urban and suburban settings.
