A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to our website. "Multidisciplinary Training in Developmental Neuroscience" is a grant funded by the National Institute of Mental Health to provide state-of-the-art training and nurture the education of students at the University of Rochester Medical Center interested in all aspects of the development of the nervous system. Understanding the processes involved in neural development and functional organization, including intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence development, is essential for the elucidation of neurobiological processes that underlie normal brain development and, thus, the etiology and treatment of mental disorders that harbor a developmental basis. Beyond a well-rounded and firm grounding in the basic neurosciences, our focus is on the basic developmental processes that contribute to the shaping of the nervous system. Our training program is multidisciplinary, taking full advantage of the unique educational and research opportunities available at the University of Rochester to train biomedical research-oriented scientists in a variety of disciplines relevant to developmental neuroscience, including combinations of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology.

Our training grant provides funding to well-qualified predoctoral students beyond their second year of training. For the trainees, funding entails support for stipend, travel to the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience as well as other training-related activities, including sponsoring of external seminar speakers and a Developmental Neuroscience Journal Club. This web site also contains information that is pertinent to first- and second-year graduate students, as well as applicants to the University of Rochester Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, who aspire to pursue Ph.D. research and a career in developmental neuroscience.

I invite you to browse our web site. If you would like additional information, I very much look forward to hearing from you.
