Modeling Immune Responses to Viral Infections

Research Description:

Dr. Lee is interested in the use of mathematical and computational modeling approaches to study viral pathogenesis and host immune responses to infection, with emphasis on HIV and highly pathogenic influenza viruses. Dr. Lee has been developing mathematical equations and computer simulations which can integrate experimental and clinical measures of virus replication and sequence diversification, as well as host immunity. Her research is supported by a newly (2009) funded NIH R01 award that focuses on the acute stage of HIV infection, and on defining vaccine-inducible host immune functions that can be expected to lead to containment of infection and long-term protection from disease. Major additional areas of interest in the laboratory include quantitative assessment on the roles of different immune components in controlling influenza virus infection. Students studying with Dr. Lee will be engaged as full scientific partners and will help to better define, improve and exploit models for virus infection, with the goal of using these models to develop improved vaccines and treatments. Prior experience in mathematics or computing is not necessary, and students can expect to participate in self-directed research that combines modeling approaches with hands-on experimentation or clinical data, in a collaborative setting.
