May 13, 2008 As Seniors Leave UR, They Leave a Lasting Impression
The Senior Design Program introduces undergraduate students to real-life problem-solving, resulting in the development of prototype medical devices or research instruments. Students are presented with problems posed by UR faculty, clinicians from the medical center, the local community, or local industry during the remainder of the year. As students explained their solutions to faculty, fellow students, staff members, and clients, they also found themselves the center of media attention. R-News reporter and anchor Diana Palotas talked with students and faculty about their projects.

May 09, 2008 "Nature" Photographic Exhibit by Babak & Anne Razavi
Babak Razavi is a trainee in the Medical Scientist Training Program pursuing an M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. His passion with photography began at a young age when his father taught him how to take pictures using a Canon AE-1 back in Iran. Anne Razavi worked as a medical physicist at the Wilmot Cancer Center and Department of Radiation Oncology. She trained at the Charité Hospital, Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. She is now a product marketing manager with Siemens Medical Solutions. Babak and Anne both enjoy capturing a variety of themes including abstracts, nature, candids, weddings, and each other.

February 13, 2008 Plucking Cells out of the Bloodstream
Bioengineers have developed an implantable device that captures very pure samples of stem cells circulating in the blood. The device, a length of plastic tubing coated with proteins, could lead to better bone-marrow transplants and stem-cell therapies, and it also shows promise as a way to capture and reprogram cancer cells roaming the bloodstream.

A combination of gene therapy and tissue grafts could offer an improved way to repair ruptured tendons and ligaments, including common sports injuries such as season-ending knee and shoulder problems, according to a new study in mice.

Senior defensive back Andy Rape has been named as an ESPN The Magazine College Division First Team Academic All-American in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He is a native of Zelienople, PA and an alumnus of Freedom Area High School.

Senior defender Matt Sulkin of the men's soccer team has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District One First Team in voting done by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

July 23, 2007 Students Place First in National Biomedical Engineering Design Competition
University of Rochester students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering placed first in a national competition for design of a portable, low-cost device that interfaces with an infusion pump. The team's design allows for safer and more accurate pumping of medicine and nutrients to an intravenous device (IV) for users with disabilities.

June 11, 2007 Lust and MacIlvain Earn Academic Honors
Distance runner Joseph Lust and middle distance competitor Brian MacIlvain have earned First Team Academic All-District I honors in cross country/track and field in voting done by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). District I is comprised of New York State and New England.
