The tuberculosis vaccine is often used as a treatment for bladder cancer, and adding vitamin D might improve the vaccine’s effectiveness, according to new research from the University of Rochester Medical Center presented today at the American Urological Association annual meeting.

URMC to Host Free Skin Cancer Screening

The University of Rochester Medical Center department of Dermatology is co-sponsoring a free Skin Cancer screening Saturday, May 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The screening, jointly sponsored with the Rochester Dermatologic Society and the American Academy of Dermatology, will be held in the Dermatology Suite, located on the second floor of the Ambulatory Care Facility (ACF) at Strong Memorial Hospital. Local providers will volunteer their time to conduct screenings to detect skin cancers, pre-cancerous conditions, and related problems.

Megan MacKenzie to Receive Wilmot Cancer Center Inspiration Award

The intensity and physical battles that Megan MacKenzie witnessed up close during her career as an ice hockey official were nothing compared to what she would face in her personal fight with breast cancer. Her determined and courageous response, and her selfless efforts to continue to raise funds to help others who face the same challenge, have resulted in MacKenzie being named recipient of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center’s 2012 Inspiration Award, the center’s highest honor. MacKenzie will be honored at the cancer center’s annual Discovery Ball, Saturday, April 28, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
