Patient Services
At the Wilmot Cancer Center, we have a dedicated team of professionals to help you through your journey. In addition to your physicians, they are committed and compassionate individuals working together to provide you the best care and support. Here is a description of these professionals and the important roles they play in your treatment.
Our Staff
- Oncology Nurses: Your oncology nurses have a wealth of experience and knowledge and will coordinate your care during your clinic visits and treatments. They work closely with your physicians to ensure that your treatment progresses as planned and that your side effects are minimized. Oncology Nurses will educate you about your treatment, in some cases, administer that treatment and monitor your physical and emotional well being. Strong Memorial Hospital is accredited as a Magnet institution for Nursing, a designation reserved for only 2% of the nation’s hospitals. It signifies a commitment and achievement of quality care and professional practice.
- Oncology Nurse Practitioners: Nurses with advanced education who work in collaboration with your physicians to provide physical examinations, evaluations and follow-up during and after your treatment. Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medications, order testing and perform procedures and may see you independently during and after your treatment.
- Radiation Therapists: Your therapists provide you your radiation treatment, operating complex treatment machines which deliver the dose of radiation prescribed by your doctor. Our therapists are specially trained and licensed in this specialty and exercise highly specialized safety checks to ensure your treatment is delivered accurately.
- Oncology Pharmacists: Our pharmacists, specialists in chemotherapy, ensure that your medications and chemotherapy are properly prepared and dispensed as per your doctor’s prescriptions. They work closely with your doctors and nurses during and after treatment and are available to help you understand your medications.
- Oncology Social Workers: Our social workers will assist you with support and counseling and are also available to help with financial concerns, along with our financial counselors. Our social workers facilitate many support groups for the benefit of patients and their families. They can refer you to community resources to help with your needs.
- Clinical Technologists: Your clinical technologists assist the nursing staff by obtaining your vital signs and placing you in examination rooms as well as many other important support functions.
- Phlebotomists: We have on-site phlebotomy staff to draw your blood for testing.
- Clerical Support Staff: Our “behind the scenes” staff answer the telephones, schedule your appointments and maintain your records, including processing disability forms and other administrative tasks.
- Financial Counselors: Our on-site financial counselors will assist you with issues related to insurance and other financial concerns.
- Cancer Center Volunteers and Ambassadors: We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers who assist patients in a variety of ways. Ambassadors help with providing directions to patients and families when they visit our center.
- Registered Dieticians are available to assist with nutritional counseling and recommendations for diet during and after treatment
- Physical Therapists: Our physical therapists help with strength training and conditioning during and after treatment.
Our Cancer Center
Our new facility was designed to ensure that you and your family will have the best environment in which to receive your care. Features of the building that will enhance your time with us include:
- Ease of access: The Cancer Center will have its own entrance with drive up and drop off points. Valet parking will also be available. Patients undergoing daily Radiation therapy will have a dedicated and convenient parking area.
- Wayfinding: The three-story atrium will be a point of reference for patients and visitors. All patient services and support services are easily accessible to the atrium. An Information desk, staffed with Ambassadors, will assist with directing patients and visitors to their destination.
- The Frank and Cricket Luellen Patient and Family Resource Center is conveniently located on the connecting link to the Strong Memorial Hospital main lobby. It is a magnificent room that will house the Alan Hermenet Book collection, along with internet access and access to community agencies who will have office space. This room, designed to be a source for patient and family education and support, will be the site for classes and support groups.
- Meditation Room: We have a beautiful meditation or “quiet” room available for our patients and families, which features a beautiful back-lighted stained glass installation. This non-denominational room is designed for prayer, reflection, or contemplation.
- Specialty Shop: Located in Strong’s main lobby area, it offers wigs, scarves, hats, and other items that may be helpful to our patients.
- Privacy: Our treatment areas have been designed to ensure that patients have the choice for privacy during their treatment. We have new and improved changing rooms and gowned waiting in the Radiation Oncology treatment area. Each infusion chair will have its own television.
- Wireless access: The entire building is wireless. Patients and visitors can access their laptops or PDA from any area.
- Art collection: Through the efforts of our volunteer Art committee, we will have lovely pieces of art located throughout the building, adding to its intent of bringing comfort and peace.
Our most important design feature has been the creative use of light and glass throughout the facility—from our signature atrium to our windows in the Infusion Center. We believe that light inspires energy and hope to all who enter.
