Skin cancer treatments at Wilmot

The Wilmot Cancer Center provides the area’s widest range of treatments for skin cancer.

While many cases of skin cancer can be treated entirely by our dermatologists, other types are best treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. By providing all of these doctors together at one center, we streamline the process of getting the most advanced skin cancer care.

The following are the various types of treatments we provide:

Biological therapy. Rather than attack cancer cells directly, biological therapy stimulates the body’s immune system to attack skin cancer cells.

Chemotherapy. When skin cancer has spread to other parts of the body, chemotherapy may be used to treat the cancer systemically.

Curretage and electrodessication. “Curretage” means the use of a small, rotating tool to scrape away cancer cells. “Electodessication” involves the use of a needle that delivers a small electric current, destroying any remaining cancer cells.

Excisional surgery. After numbing the area, the tumor is cut out of the skin and the edges of the skin are stitched together.

Freezing. Liquid nitrogen is used to kill cancer cells by freezing them. This technique is most often used for early stage skin cancer.

Laser surgery. A laser is used to vaporize cancer cells. Like freezing, laser surgery is most often used for early cancers.

Medical therapy. Some types of skin cancer can be treated with medicated creams that are applied to the skin.

Mohs surgery. The tumor is removed layer by layer, helping to minimize damage to healthy skin. Each layer of skin is examined until no more cancer cells are found.

Radiation therapy. When surgery is not an option, radiation therapy may be used to treat skin cancer.

Plastic surgery. Treatment for skin cancer can often affect a person’s appearance. That is why the Wilmot Cancer Center works closely with the region’s top plastic surgeons at the University of Rochester Medical Center for reconstruction after skin cancer surgery.
