Wilmot Cancer Research
Fellowship Program
Program Objective
The Wilmot Cancer Research Fellowship Program was established at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry with funds provided by the late James P. Wilmot through a foundation established in his memory.
The program is open to junior faculty employed by the University of Rochester Medical Center and prepares physicians for careers in investigation of the causes, behavior, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer. It is hoped that the physicians that are selected and have completed their research program will have sufficient expertise in fundamental biomedical research to enable them to make significant contributions to our understanding of cancer.
Program Description
The fellowship program provides up to three years of research training in laboratories of senior basic or clinical science faculty who provide in-depth experience in cancer-related biomedical research. Research in many disciplines is available, including:
- Endocrinology
- Experimental therapeutics
- Genetics
- Hematology
- Immunology
- Microbiology
- Molecular and cellular biology
- Pathology and electron microscopy
- Pharmacology
- Radiation oncology
- Epidemiology
- Prevention
- Health services

Fellows have access to all the facilities, faculty, and educational programs of the University of Rochester Medical Center, as well as the special facilities of the Cancer Center. The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center has national recognition in cancer research and treatment programs.
The research experience is supplemented by numerous in-house research seminars and visiting scientists presenting seminars in the core areas. There is also a seminar series sponsored by the Wilmot Fellowship Program, with guest scientists speaking on current developments on cancer or cancer-related research. Wilmot Cancer Center Fellows have the opportunity to discuss their research with these distinguished visitors.
Wilmot Fellows may also enroll in any graduate course offered at the University that is appropriate to their research needs and interests. This may include courses in biology, molecular biology, cell physiology, virology, genetics, immunology, biostatistics, and computer science. In addition, Wilmot Fellows may pursue studies toward a Ph.D. degree during their fellowship.
