Research Facilities

Resources at the University of Rochester Medical Center rival those of some of the nation's most renowned facilities. As a result of some of the ongoing consolidation and recent construction, the URMC is reconfiguring research space and will add approximately 160,000 square feet to its existing laboratory space over the next few years. Much of this will continue to reside in two premier Medical Research Buildings. These modern facilities, which were opened in 1999 and 2002, provide an excellent physical environment for interdisciplinary research.

Our research facilities include:

Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building

Opened in June, 1999, this four-story, 240,000 square-foot building houses:

The architectural signature of the building is the dramatic point on the west side, which houses the triangular break rooms on each floor. The purpose of these rooms is to foster interaction and the exchange of ideas among scientists in an informal, relaxed setting.

Research laboratories feature state-of-the-art scientific equipment. The generic laboratories are designed to accommodate virtually any bench top research, while the flexible support space can be tailored to the specific requirements of individual researchers.

Medical Research Building-X

This four-story 143,000 square-foot building was just completed in 2002. It’s connected by a three-story, glass-enclosed walkway to the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building. The work of the scientists located there complement the research taking place in the Aab Institute. The building houses the:

James P. Wilmot Cancer Center

An entire floor, approximately 40,000 square feet, of the new Wilmot Cancer Center is devoted to cancer research. The new bench space enhances collaboration and the effort to push discoveries faster from the laboratory to the marketplace. Approximately three-quarters of the facility will be filled with current URMC cancer researchers, with room left over for future recruits.

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

The URMC plans to build a 150,000-square foot Clinical and Translational Sciences Building to consolidate scattered programs and resources under a single roof including scientific disciplines, education and training programs, critical support operations, and several large clinical research programs. Groundbreaking is expected to occur in fall 2008. Specifically, the building will be home to programs and resources that help scientists and clinicians overcome the administrative, technological and regulatory challenges to advancing their research. The building will also house the hub of the Upstate New York Translational Research Network – a research consortium consisting of the region’s 10 major biomedical research institutions.
