demmeRichard Demme, MD FACP

Associate Professor of Medicine and Humanities

Dr. Demme is a Board Certified Nephrologist at Strong Memorial Hospital. 
He completed undergraduate degrees in Biology and Classical Civilization, graduating summa cum laude fromSUNY at Buffalo. He received his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse in 1987, and completed a Nephrology Fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in 1993.  He spent several years as a teaching physician in the U.S. Air Force.  He completed a Certificate in Clinical Bioethics through the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in 2001, and was among the first graduates of the AMA-MCW Online Fellowship in Physician Ethics and Professionalism in June, 2004.  He has served in various capacities on hospital ethics committees and clinical ethics consult services since 1993.   He has particular interest in ethical issues in transplantation, and has published a book chapter on ethical issues in xenotransplantation.

At the present time, he serves on the URMC Dialysis and Transplantation Committee, Living Donor Advocacy Committee, Clinical Council, and Transplant Quality Council.  Currently, he serves as a member of the Clinical Ethics Consult Team, and as Chair of the Strong Health Ethics Committee.  He has taught medical student seminars on ethical issues in transplantation, and Classic Cases in Bioethics.  He has strong interests in end of life care, transplantation, and the history of medical ethics.
