MEDICAL ETHICS AND MILITARIZATION IN THE BORDERLANDS

Presented by Jared Lunkenheimer, a fourth year medical students, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry

A brief review will be presented of the sociopolitical background of undocumented immigration in the Sonoran Desert region of southern Arizona, with a summary of the humanitarian response by the organization No More Deaths. An actual case of a patient found injured and severely dehydrated in the desert will be presented, followed by a discussion of the ethical obligation to a patient's confidentiality in the setting of a militarized border enforcement zone.
