What Does Evidence-Based Mean?

The terms "evidence-based treatment" and "evidence-based practice" are often confused. Evidence-based treatments (EBTs) are interventions that have been proven effective through rigorous research methodologies. Evidence-based practice (EBP) refers to a decision-making process which integrates the best available research, clinician expertise, and client characteristics to inform treatment planning and progress monitoring, in order to improve the quality of clinical judgments and facilitate cost-effective care.

In medicine and psychology, EBT and EBP are used to make clinical decisions for individual patients.

In education, EBT and EBP are used to make educational decisions for students.
