RRCASD Newsletter
Our newsletter is published semi-annually and covers a range of information including feature stories, product and book reviews, research updates, new activities and resources and an "Ask the Expert" column.

Training CD
Each year the RRCASD develops a training CD which can be used by individuals or groups for the purposes of self-guided study and/or in-service training. Each CD is approximately 30 minutes in length and provides training slides, an accompanying study guide and a self-quiz.

National Resources

Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks provides information on a wide variety of resources for family, community, social and recreational support across the lifespan. Many resources developed or sponsored by Autism Speaks are available for download or by contacting Autism Speaks directly. Visit the Autism Speaks web site or the links listed below to learn more and to view the various resources.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

The American Academy of Pediatrics website contains valuable information about caring for children and youth with an ASD. Visit their website to learn more and to view their resources.

Maternal and Child Health

Knowledge Path: Autism Spectrum Disorders is an online library of resources brought to you by the Maternal and Child Health Library. You'll find a large collection of web resources, publications and articles, newsletters and online discussion groups. If you’re interested in specific information on a wide array of emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns, look at Knowledge Path: Children and Adolescents with Emotional, Behavioral, and Mental Health Challenges, this site contains a large collection of information and resources for professionals, families and schools.

Heroes With Handicaps
Heroes With Handicaps, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization founded for the purpose of providing financial assistance for children with autism whose parents are currently serving or have retired from military service.

Stop Bullying Now!
Stop Bullying Now is sponsored in part by HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration). It's a site where you will find lots of information on bullying for parents and kids - the site is also available in Spanish

Going to College: An Online Resource for Teens with Disabilities
Topic areas include learning how to use your strengths, personal learning style and interests to set goals for college. Learn what to expect when you get to college (including campus life) and what your professors will expect from you. You will find tips for good grades, accommodations and using technology. Learn what you can do now to prepare for college today

 

Local/Regional Resources

Parent Educator Resource Library (PERL)
The Parent-Educator Resource Library (PERL) connects families and educators with the information they need to help students. Available through the PERL web site is the Disability Resource Guide: Recreation Booklet by UNYFEAT, which lists a directory of various recreational opportunities in the Greater Rochester Area as well as many other valuable resource guides.

Lifespan Autism Services in Central New York

The Kelberman Center, at Upstate Cerebral Palsy, located in Utica, NY provides services to children and adults with autism including diagnostic evaluations, support groups, recreational programs, parent and professional education, and consultation. Contact the Center at 315-797-6241. Family Connect is a resource accessible through Upstate Cerebral Palsy which serves to connect people with services and programs available at UCP and the Kelberman Center. Call 1-800-470-4999 to speak with a Family Connect professional Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Social Skills and Anxiety Management Groups

Strong Behavioral Health: Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services sponsor two skill-building groups for children and adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder. The social skills group teaches skills necessary for successful social interactions. The anxiety management group teaches participants how to reduce and manage anxiety while also building social skill competence.

Buddy Group at SUNY Binghamton

The Buddy Group is an after school therapeutic social skills program that was developed to address social skill deficits in elementary and middle school aged children with autism. The kids are paired up with student volunteers (the buddies) to help them learn appropriate social interactions. Contact Linda Matey at 607-777-2829 for information.

Social Skills Group in Syracuse

SUNY Upstate Medical University, Department of Psychiatry is sponsoring a social skills group for children with ASD ages 8-12 in Syracuse. Contact Dr. Kevin Antshel for more information at 315-464-3100.

Parent to Parent of NYS

Parents of children with disabilities can find support through the Parent to Parent network in New York State. A unique feature of this organization is the Parent Matching Program where volunteer Support Parents provide 1:1 assistance and support. Check their website to find the Parent to Parent office in your area.
