Have you ever witnessed anything “miraculous?” Miraculous things are “highly improbable and extraordinary.” They “bring very welcome consequences.” This issue of the Golisano Children’s Hospital Newsletter features our Miracle Kids and this community’s Miracle Makers. I think you’ll agree, all of our Miracle Kids have beaten the odds. Their recoveries, their perseverance, their energy and optimism in the face of adversity are improbable, extraordinary, and very, very welcome. This year’s Miracle Makers have brought about miraculous transformation – of our building, rising from the ground as I write; of our programs, discovering and inventing new approaches to childhood health and disease even as funding for research and education shrinks; of our workforce, with physicians, nurses, scientists, therapists lured to Rochester from all around the U.S. and world.
This issue also gives you just a small sampling of our partners in everything we do. Organizations like Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the Finger Lakes Kiwanis, International House of Pancakes, SUNY Brockport, and radio stations 100.5 The Drive and WHAM 1180 and TV stations News10NBC and 13WHAM connect us to the wonderful people around us and enable us to do everything we do for western NY and beyond.
Finally, this issue pays homage to Dr. Robert A. Hoekelman, the fifth chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and pediatrician-in-chief of what was to become Golisano Children’s Hospital. Dr. Hoekelman passed away at age 85 in March. He leaves behind hundreds of mentees, colleagues, friends, grateful patients and families all over upstate NY, and a wonderful personal family that has continued to make kids a top priority.
Enjoy and watch us grow because of you!
