Construction Corner: We’re Going Vertical!

Things are moving quickly as we prepare for our new children's hospital, set to open in 2015! This spring brought a lot of changes to the visual, and physical, landscape of the construction site. We had the privilege of touring the site of the future Golisano Children's Hospital and seeing these changes first hand.

With the help of a 205’ assist crane, we watched a more than 155' tall tower crane be assembled in early May. “Towering” over the University of Rochester Medical Center, the crane does a lot of heavy lifting. Whether they are moving bundles of rebar, picking up dumpsters of waste, or, most recently, lifting columns of steel, the crane operators are certainly busy!

Shortly after the crane was built, Golisano Children’s Hospital Project Coordinator, Mike O'Connell, and Project Manager, Evangelos Yannas, gave us an inside look at the building progress, as well as a detailed description of what the future hospital will look like once it’s complete! The location of healing gardens, the imaging sciences lobby, main patient elevators, and more, became even more real as we walked around the building’s interior.

Perhaps the most momentous and exciting change is the vertical, and horizontal, placement of the steel beams and the decking, that is already complete in multiple areas! Seeing the steel rise from the foundation of what is quickly becoming the new children's hospital, and thinking of the patients and families the building will soon serve, is truly inspiring.
