About Kids and Burn Injuries

Thousands of children suffer burn-related injuries each year. According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, children ages 4 and under are at the greatest risk for burns with an injury rate more than four times higher than children ages 5 to 14. Burns caused by hot liquid or steam, are the most common injuries for younger children, while burns caused by contact with fire, are the most common among older children.

Tips to Keep Kids Safe From Burn Injuries

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home.
  • Keep matches, lighters, and other flammable materials out of the reach of children.
  • Lower the setting on your water heater to 120°F or below.
  • Never leave a child alone in the kitchen or bathroom. Install anti-scald devices in water faucets and shower heads.
