Tests and Procedures

Our services include comprehensive diagnostic testing as well as numerous diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including:

Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy
Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy allows pulmonologists to look inside the lungs with a fiberoptic scope. It’s not surgery, but does require sedation.
Imaging studies
- X-ray
- Computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Ultrasound
Oxygen and carbon dioxide monitoring
Pulmonary function testing
Sweat test
A sweat test measures the amount of chloride and sodium in the patient’s sweat. A high level of chloride or sodium is an indication of cystic fibrosis. Although there are several methods for performing a sweat test, our procedure is approved and recommended by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Bronchoalveolar lavage
This procedure helps doctors to diagnose and understand the progression of lung disease. A small, fiberoptic tube is placed into the lung, injects saline into the lung and removes the fluid. The sample of fluid removed contains secretions, cells, and proteins from the lungs. Doctors can analyze the sample to determine what may be occurring in the patient's lungs.
Laryngoscopy
This simple procedure examines the larynx (voice box) using either a small mirror held against the back of the palate, or a viewing tube called a laryngoscope.
Thoracentesis
Thoracentesis is a procedure to remove fluid from the space between the lining of the outside of the lungs (pleura) and the wall of the chest.
