The Center for Neurodegenerative and Vascular Brain Disorders


The Center for Neurodegenerative and Vascular Brain Disorders focuses on studies of neurovascular mechanisms in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), as well as on brain ischemia and neuroprotection in stroke and head injury. Our key efforts focus on the role of cell-to-cell signaling within the neurovascular unit and neurons in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders of the aging brain.  The Investigators in the Center work on the development of new pre-clinical therapeutic approaches and the identification of novel targets for intervention in AD, as well as in ALS, PD, stroke and other disorders. The Center supports innovative research directions in cellular, molecular and translational neuroscience and cerebrovascular biology with a penchant for working beyond the mainstream.An overarching goal is to promote the development of novel concepts in disease mechanisms in AD, ALS, PD and stroke which will have valuable clinical translational potential and identifiable approaches and targets to contribute to “first in man” therapeutic discoveries. The Center interacts closely with Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neurobiology and Anatomy, Medicine, Biomedical Imaging and Brain and Cognitive Sciences programs at the University.
