A COMMUNICATION INTERVENTION TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
July, 2009
Physical inactivity is emerging as an important risk factor for common cancers. Primary prevention through physical activity could reduce the growing burden of cancer. Primary care clinicians are well positioned to promote increased patient physical activity. Recent studies have shown that brief clinical counseling can improve short and long-term physical activity outcomes. This training will provide a specific, guided, patient - clinician plan to promote physical activity. In order for the clinician communication skills to be effective or sustained, ample evidence shows that clinician training must be intensive (minimum of 2-4 hours), reinforced over time (i.e. multiple brief sessions rather than one long session) and use a variety of interactive pedagological techniques with expert and patient feedback. Clinicians will be trained using didactic materials, skills/competency checklists, sample "scripts", role play and cognitive rehearsal - procedures regarded as the most effective techniques for communication training according to published reviews. Clinician communication training interventions that include these features do improve patient outcomes such as adherence to treatment, participatory decision-making, eliciting patient preferences, recall of treatment decisions, satisfaction, trust and problem-solving skills without increasing visit length.

HOSPITAL MEDICINE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SERIES
October 2008 - December 2009

The target audience is the Hospital Medicine Division faculty, the majority of whom started practicing within the past 5 years. Their practice involves educating residents and students while caring for medically complex inpatients. Early career faculty have little guidance on how to teach effectively in this setting and how to develop their academic and clinical careers. Members of the Hospital Medicine Division were surveyed and asked to indicate their interest and needs in learning about various faculty depvelpment topics. This series is designed to provide them with the skills to do both. Faculty are encouraged to also participate in the school-wide UR faculty development series; our program is designed to dovetail with this program.
