MACH 2010 - Maternal and Child Health Analytic
Training for the Year 2010
Application Process
All applicants will be required to submit application
materials on-line, to emphasize the heavy electronic component of
this training and to demonstrate agency capacity to connect to the
Internet (which is an agency requirement). Both agency and participant
factors will qualify potential participants for MACH 2010 training.
Because this initiative is envisioned as an in-depth, serious training
effort, both agency and participant commitment is required to ensure
appropriateness and to enhance sustainability. This training is anticipated
to expand both the agency's and participant's skill sets and capacities
to conduct and manage basic analyses of maternal and child health
information; therefore, commitment on the part of both is required
for admission and completion of the training.
The applicant and their agency sponsor will form the
team within the agency upon which other data initiatives will expand.
This joint commitment will increase the probability that both the
applicant and the agency will expand their data capacity beyond the
scope of this project, and that the goals of this project will be
sustained beyond the training.
Applicant Requirements
Applicants need to be committed professionals with data responsibilities
in their agencies who can invest the time in completing the training
as required. Participants who complete the entire MACH 2010 training
program will serve not only their agencies but also their communities
as resources in MCH data issues. They are expected to participate
beyond this training in special workshops, trainings, and meetings
of data professionals both locally and statewide. Applicants are
expected to reflect the following:
- Direct current job responsibility for data collection, tabulation,
and/or reporting of information within their agencies
- At least one year of experience working in an agency or on a
project that collected, analyzed, or reported data of interest
to women, infants, and children
- Have computer aptitude, attested by agency sponsor and through
completion of electronic application process
- Have a working knowledge of using the Internet (including browsers
such as Netscape or Explorer)
- Ability to commit up to four hours per week in completing assignments
and exercises
- Ability to attend two, two-day sessions during the nine month
period for on-site training
- Interest in serving the community as a data resource
- Ability to work with the agency sponsor to complete a Data Action
Plan at the completion of the training.

Agency Requirements
Agencies will be required to identify an Agency Sponsor (typically
the applicant's supervisor) and must submit an Agency Recommendation
Form for each supported student.
By completing an Agency Recommendation Form sponsoring agencies
attest to the following:
- That at least part of the agency's mission and tasks include
service to families, pregnant women, infants, and children
- That the agency serves a culturally diverse population, or other
populations, where analysis of MCH data by race and ethnicity
would prove useful
- That the agency has a need or interest in developing its own
data capacity
- That participants will be provided with Internet access and
a computer for completion of coursework of up to four hours per
week of the training; (minimum requirements: Pentium II running
at least 200mhz with Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer or
Netscape version 4.0 or higher.)
- That the applicant be allowed to spend up to four hours per
week, as required, during regular work hours to complete assignments;
- That the agency maintains an interest in working with other
similar or local agencies in providing opportunities for data
professionals to network
- That the agency will commit to completing an Agency Evaluation
Interview of the applicant's data-related tasks and performance
during the project period, and annually thereafter.
