Master of Public Health : Combined Masters Programs

BA / MPH Program (Also known as MPH 3/2 Program

The BA/MPH Program, called the MPH 3/2 Program is open to University of Rochester undergraduates who meet MPH program criteria and are accepted by the MPH Admissions Committee. This highly selective program allows talented undergraduates to get their Bachelors degree and the MPH degree from the School of Medicine and Dentistry in 5 years, a savings of 1 year over the typical "4 plus 2" years if the two degrees were pursued sequentially. Applicants apply in the spring of their junior year of college, with applications reviewed by the MPH Admissions Committee after the applicant’s 2nd semester junior year grades are available. Successful applicants spend their senior year of college taking first year MPH courses, and the following year – year 5 – they complete the MPH requirements and receive the MPH degree.

Becoming an MPH student in the 3/2 program is appropriate for a mature college student, with excellent academic credentials and significant "real world" experience, who makes a strong case that the MPH degree is consistent with his or her career goals. Potential 3/2 applicants are strongly advised to discuss the 3/2 program with their undergraduate adviser as well as the Director of the MPH program. Early planning for the 3/2 program is essential as applicants must demonstrate completion of undergraduate requirements before beginning a graduate program in what is their senior year of college. We urge special consideration be given to whether the potential applicant might get more from the MPH program if he or she postponed it until after college, other graduate study, and/or work experience. Additionally, undergraduates who are heavily involved in campus activities should give serious consideration to postponing graduate study until after their senior year, since the demands of first year MPH study presuppose a high level of commitment to graduate program requirements.

The MPH 3/2 Program works by allowing students to apply credits from the MPH program towards the remaining number of credits they need for their undergraduate degree. We ask applicants for the MPH 3/2 Program to submit their application materials after they have their Junior Year Spring semester grades. Since our deadline is June 1st, the materials come to us by late May. We review the materials, and if our Admissions Committee decides in favor of the applicant, we notify the applicant that we will consider them to be an MPH 3/2 student, essentially an informal acceptance into the program. However, for purposes of registration, etc., the student would be on the books as a student in the College. S/he takes MPH courses in what is his or her senior year; permission to take is extended for all courses that require our faculty members' agreement. At the end of that year, we formally admit the student into the MPH Program. In what is the student's 2nd year of MPH courses, s/he becomes a graduate student in the Medical School, and completes all MPH requirements during that year.

While Health and Society majors can use one of the MPH courses as a substitute for the Senior Seminar, usually taken during a student's senior year, students majoring in other fields must make special arrangements to complete their senior year requirements. Because first year MPH 3/2 students must begin the MPH program with at least 12 credits per semester (most graduate courses are 3.0 credits), it is not feasible to overload at the same time with courses to complete undergraduate requirements.

Admission to the MPH 3/2 Program is highly selective. In addition to strong Graduate Record Examination scores, the Admissions Committee looks for an accomplished academic record and demonstrated commitment to pursue graduate study. Community service, work experience, and participation in research relevant to public health are all considered favorably by the Admissions Committee. Strong endorsements by referees who know the applicant in both academic and non-curricular settings are most helpful to the Admissions Committee. Furthermore, because the MPH student body is predominately composed of adult students, the Admissions Committee looks for 3/2 applicants who have a high level of self-confidence and can "hold their own" in a diverse group of adult learners. An applicant’s decision to withdraw a 3/2 application in favor of an additional year of college or to gain work experience will be viewed without prejudice by the Admissions Committee if the applicant reapplies at a future time.
