My research interests include studies of quality of care provided
by managed care and the effect of market forces (such as competition)
on quality. Recent publications include:

- Bruce Friedman
Dr. Friedman has considerable interest and experience in managed
care research relating to elderly people. In the early 1990's, he
conducted a survey of the medical directors of the Medicare health
maintenance organizations to determine the extent to which those
organizations were carrying out recommended geriatric practices
(Friedman, B, and Kane, RL. HMO Medical Directors' Perceptions of
Geriatric Practice in Medicare HMOs. Journal of the American Geriatrics
Society, 41(10): 1144- 49, October 1993). Since the mid 1990s he
has been studying differences in hospital, skilled nursing facility,
and home healthcare utilization in two managed care organizations:
a Social Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and a Medicare risk
HMO. Here he has been applying various sophisticated analytic techniques,
including bivariate probit, instrumental variables, sample selection
models, and the two-part model.
- Helena Temkin-Greener
Health services research focusing on organization, financing,
and delivery of care for the elderly; development of risk-adjusted
payment models, and outcomes research.
