Research Nursing

The research nursing team, with adult and pediatric experience, is assigned exclusively to the Clinical Research Center for inpatient and outpatient services.

  • Experienced nursing staff with a variety of backgrounds including medical, surgical, and pediatric experience
  • Orientation with investigators for protocol design, technique, and initiation
  • 24-hour nursing coverage for all research protocols including inpatient and outpatient services for adult and pediatric subjects
  • Private examination rooms to promote confidentiality
  • Private hospital-styled rooms, with a shared bathroom, for overnight studies
  • Blood sampling via venipuncture, peripheral IV access, or implanted vascular access device access
  • Insertion and maintenance of peripheral IV access
  • Administration of study medication, including IV infusion (via Alaris pump) or subcutaneous injection
  • Subcutaneous injection teaching with the research subject or designee
  • Resting 12 lead ECGs (via Phillips Page Writer)
  • Application of 24- or 48-hour holter monitor
  • Cardiac telemetry on unit
  • Adult and Pediatric Emergency equipment/AED/O2
  • Anthropometric measurements
  • Manual or automatic (Dynamap) blood pressure measurements
  • Serial blood sampling setups (i.e., tubes, labels, transfer tubes, and flow sheets)
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests and Fasting Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test procedures
  • Precise collection of samples including 24-hour urine and serial blood/urine samples (pharmacokinetics)
  • Biosafety Level II lab/specimen processing (cold centrifuge)
  • -20 C and -80 C freezer for temporary sample storage
  • Assistance for biopsies (muscle, fat, and skin)
  • In collaboration with the Department of Imaging Sciences, infant, pediatric, and adult DXA scans can be performed on a Hologic Bone Densitometer.
