UNYTRN Pilot Program 2007 Awardees

The University of Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Institute is pleased to announce the 2007 awardees of the Upstate New York Consortium for Healthcare Research and Quality (UNYCHRQ) and the Upstate New York Translational Research Network (UNYTRN) Pilot Collaboratives Grants.

The Pilot Research Collaboratives Program is a funding initiative of the University of Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Institute.  A total of $170,000 was available for funding pilot-scale projects that involved at least 2 members of UNYCHRQ/UNYTRN.  Nine different institutions in Upstate NY are represented in the list of awardees.  Projects start on October 1, 2007, and can last for up to 18 months.

The funded Collaboratives are:

The Emergency Research Network of the Empire State (ERNES), a project that will connect emergency rooms across Upstate New York for the purpose of conducting clinical and translational research. Given the nature of emergency medicine, high quality clinical and translational research is rarely carried out in this discipline.  ERNES will provide an infrastructure for research that aims to reduce mortality and morbidity associated with acute illness and injury.  Funding is also provided for a feasibility study focused on mild traumatic brain injury.  The lead agency for this project is the University of Rochester’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Partners include Albany Medical Center, Upstate Medical University, Guthrie Healthcare System, Bassett Healthcare, and the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.  Thomas Richardson, PhD, from the UR Department of Emergency Medicine, is Principal Investigator.

The Upstate Imaging Biomarkers Consortium, an innovative collaboration between radiologists and surgical oncologists at several Upstate cancer research and treatment centers that will serve as a large “virtual imaging laboratory”.  Researchers a multiple sites will be able to exchange and critically evaluate imaging data and develop standardized criteria for assessing a patient’s response to existing and novel cancer therapeutics.  The intent is to facilitate communication among different treatment sites, and eventually link the Upstate region’s cancer centers to the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid, a nation-wide initiative supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  Roswell Park Cancer Institute on behalf of the University at Buffalo will serve as the lead agency, in partnership with the University of Rochester.  Ronald Gottleib, MD MPH, from Roswell Park serves as Principal Investigator.

The Upstate Lipidomics Collaborative, a project that will explore the beneficial effects of omega-3 fatty acids in cardiac patients. The group will develop new technologies for detecting and measuring derivatives of omega-3 fatty acids in patients at high risk for cardiac failure. Researchers from the University of Rochester will partner with researchers at Cornell University’s Division of Nutritional Sciences, and at the Albany College of Pharmacy.  Robert Block, MD MPH, of the UR Department of Community and Preventive Medicine is Principal Investigator.
