Novel Clinical & Translational Methodologies Pilot Funding Awards

Two steps have been identified as the major roadblocks that prevent new information in the basic sciences from being translated into new therapies for clinical application: the discovery step (translation between bench and bedside) and the implementation step (translation between bedside and practice). The overall goal of the NCTMC is to help overcome specifically identified limitations at either the discovery or implementation step by developing widely applicable methodologies that will significantly enhance the validity and accuracy, scope, or speed of translational research.

For example, pilot awards could support the development of novel in vitro assays with clinical Drs. Eddie Schwarz and John Treanormaterials or the development of better endpoints for trials, such as imaging techniques, biomarkers, functional assessments. Or remote sensing devices could also be supported. Finally, novel methodologies for trial design or analysis will also be considered for support.

Hypothesis research and development of specific diagnostics or therapies will NOT be supported by this mechanism.

The UR-CTSI anticipates funding approximately three pilot awards each year at a maximum level of $90,000 per project. Several small travel awards will also be funded to support training in a new methodology at another institution, for application at the URMC.

A new Novel and Clinical Translational Methodologies RFA was released on August 21, 2009. Initial proposals are due September 30, and full proposals will be due October 30.
