Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules is a collaborative pilot program designed to develop partnerships between pharmaceutical companies and the biomedical research community, with the goal of identifying promising new treatments for patients. NCATS has partnered initially with Pfizer Inc., AstraZeneca, and Eli Lilly and Company, which have agreed to make more than 20 molecular compounds available for the program.
In Fiscal Year 2013, NCATS will provide up to $20 million to fund cooperative agreement research grants. Under these awards, researchers will test whether one of the compounds may be effective against a previously unexplored disease target. Read more about pilot program here. The announcement is expected to be published later this month. For more information, please read the Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Pre-Applications, which is available here. The first estimated application due date is mid-July 2012.
NCATS has issued an RFI (Request for Information) seeking input from the biomedical research community, potential biotechnology and pharmaceutical company partners, and other members of the public on this proposed therapeutics discovery program, and more broadly, on how the government can partner with the private sector in this area. The RFI is available here. Scott Steele, Ph.D., Director of Research Alliances, will coordinate the University’s comments for submission. Faculty who would like to submit comments must do so by May 25th. Dr. Steele can be reached at 275-0708 or by e-mail at scott.steele@rochester.edu.
